 | Fyrtalet is one of several student residences in the leafy, peaceful district of Gärdet. The building mainly holds student rooms i corridors. Despite of their size they are well planned and have large windows facing east or west.
Gärdet is actually part of Östermalm, but certainly has its own identity. Architecturally, Gärdet is more suburban than most central districts, despite being just a couple of metro stops away from the city centre. Almost all the buildings here are tower blocks with green spaces in between, mostly built in the 1930s in functionalist style. The area is well served with grocery shops and local amenities. One good tip for students is to browse the bargains in the large Myrorna second-hand shop in Hjorthagen, where you’ll find furniture, kitchen utensils and clothing at prices which are affordable even on a student budget.
Gärdet is the name of both the district and the large open space which stretches alongside the Djurgårdsbrunn Canal, past the Kaknäs Tower and onwards to the water at Lilla Värtan. Together with Djurgården, this is one of the most pleasant parts of Stockholm, and there are plenty of museums, cafés and restaurants. The part of Gärdet which is closest to Fyrtalet has a sports field with football pitches, volley-ball courts and a swimming pool. Cinephiles will be pleased to learn that there is also a multiplex cinema nearby. The Cinemateket film club has two daily showings of art-house films. | Address: Värtavägen 66, 115 38 Stockholm Bus: route 1 Metro stop: Gärdet
