Many people like doing DIY at home and you are entitled to paint and decorate your apartment at your own expense. You are also allowed to put up Venetian blinds, a peephole in the door and install an extra lock. The work must be done professionally and the changes must not be too extreme. Otherwise, you may be obliged to restore or pay to restore the apartment to its original state before you move out. Contact your house caretaker if you are unsure about what you are allowed to do yourself or if you need advice or tips.

Doors

You may fit an extra lock on your front door. If you buy an extra lock, you will have to pay for any service/repairs to it yourself and you must leave it there or restore the door to its original state when you move.

Windows

You may order and put up Venetian blinds yourself. If you decide to take your blinds with you when you move, you must ensure that the window frames are restored to their original state.

Curtain rails and fittings are normally standard and are part of the apartment’s basic equipment. If you want different curtaining in your apartment, it’s easy to change. Please keep the original fittings however so that you can put them back up when you move. You also pay for and put up roller blinds yourself.

Flooring

If you are good with your hands and want to put a new floor down, it is important to follow the instructions carefully. If the floor is too extreme, or poorly laid, you may be obliged to restore it or pay to have it restore to its original state when you move.

Cupboards and wardrobes

Wardrobes and cupboards, and their fittings, are part of the apartment’s basic equipment. Do you want to add more wardrobe fittings? Your house caretaker can give you information about the make of wardrobe/cupboard in your apartment and may also know where you can buy extra ones.

Do you want to paint your kitchen units? Contact your house caretaker and s/he can help you with tips and advice.

You may not …

  • change the planning of the apartment by putting up walls without first contacting your house caretaker.
  • erect an arch between two rooms without approval from your house caretaker.
  • do anything to the apartment’s electrical wiring or plumbing. Such work must be done be a qualified professional. This also applies to the installation of washing machines and other equipment.
  • put up a satellite dish on the outside of the building or on the window ledge.
