Here you can find information about what you are responsible for in your home and what to consider if you want to make any changes.
Lighting
You are responsible for replacing light bulbs in the fixed light fittings in your home. This includes, for example, bulbs in the oven, refrigerator and kitchen fan, as well as fluorescent tubes.
Drilling holes in the wall
You may drill holes in the walls to put up items such as pictures or shelves. Make sure to use fixings that are suitable for the type of wall and the weight of the item you are putting up.
When you move out, you need to restore your home and fill the holes you have drilled.
Installing a dishwasher or washing machine
If you live in a student room, you are not allowed to install a dishwasher or washing machine, either in your room or in the shared areas.
If you live in an apartment, it may be possible to install a dishwasher and/or washing machine, depending on whether the apartment is prepared for it. We primarily recommend dishwashers that do not require a fixed connection, such as a countertop dishwasher with a built-in water tank.
If you want to install a dishwasher or washing machine that requires a fixed connection, you must first contact your caretaker to check whether this is possible in your apartment. You are responsible for the cost of the installation and any necessary restoration when you move out.
Any fixed installation must be carried out professionally to reduce the risk of water damage. If an incorrect installation causes damage, you may be held liable for the cost.
Painting, wallpapering and blinds
You may paint or wallpaper your home at your own expense. You may also install blinds or roller blinds. The work must be carried out professionally.
Always contact your caretaker before making any changes so that your home can be inspected before the work begins. If the work is not carried out professionally, you may need to restore the home or pay the cost of restoring it when you move out.
Blocked drains
Washbasin
You are responsible for cleaning the washbasin drain:
- Place a bucket under the drain before taking it apart.
- Remove hair and dirt and clean the pipes.
- Reassemble the parts securely and run the water for a while to make sure there are no leaks.
Floor drain
Clean the floor drain regularly to reduce the risk of unpleasant odours and blockages:
- Lift the floor drain cover and clean it.
- Clean the drain, for example using a dish brush and washing-up liquid.
- If the floor drain has a removable insert, take it out and clean it. Make sure to put it back securely when you are finished.
